Geriatric Fracture Program

Geriatric trauma patients benefit from an interdisciplinary approach to care beginning in the ED. Interdisciplinary care is optimal for care of geriatric patients with complex medical and injury conditions.

We Care About Your Geriatric Trauma Patients

The national proportion of trauma patients aged 65 and older has tripled in the past two decades, and this demographic shift necessitates a strategic, evidence-based approach to improving outcomes and reducing costs, particularly given the low reimbursement rates from Medicare. Let B+A come alongside your trauma program leaders to develop a comprehensive Geriatric Fracture Program (GFP). The GFP will provide an interdisciplinary framework to streamline care pathways, enhance patient outcomes, and deliver significant cost savings by leveraging proven methodologies, multidisciplinary collaboration, and cutting-edge tools to establish the hospital as a leader in geriatric trauma.

Potential outcomes of a GFP program could include:

  • Improved coordination of care and enhanced patient throughput.

  • Fewer complications, decreased readmissions, and improved patient outcomes.

  • Enhanced collaboration and a strong quality improvement initiative among key surgical, medical, nursing, and ancillary departments.

  • Improved physician satisfaction due to greater efficiency and support.

  • A shorter length of stay and increased profitability.

  • A state-of-the-art program that leads the state and provides an opportunity for collaboration and mentorship with other Providence hospitals.

Components of the Project

The components of a typical GFP project may include the following:

  • Assistance in creating a collaborative, multidisciplinary process for developing a GFP.

  • Assessment of current care processes to identify barriers and opportunities for improvement.

  • Benchmark initiative to establish baseline performance and identify metrics for monitoring success and improvement.

  • Assistance in developing and implementing a GFP plan, including key development steps, timeline, and accountability structure.

  • Auditing of coding of geriatric fracture patient records to identify disconnects between medical record documentation and coding/billing.

  • Advising on other trauma center issues related to geriatric fracture care.
